Affirmative Action

The City University of New York (CUNY) has a long-standing commitment to diversity and equal opportunity in all aspects of employment practices. The senior management team fully supports the policies and practices we have implemented to foster non-discrimination, affirmative action, and diversity and inclusion in the workplace. CUNY is enriched by the strengths of the people and perspectives represented in our institution. Accordingly, Dean Mantsios, Associate Dean Sacks, and Associate Dean Schrynemakers continue to be committed to the Central Office’s compliance with the CUNY Policies and Procedures on Equal Opportunity, Non-Discrimination, and on Sexual Misconduct.

The Equal Opportunity and Non-Discrimination Policy states CUNY’s commitment to recruit, employ, retain, promote, and provide benefits to employees without regard to race, color, creed, national origin, ethnicity, ancestry, religion, age, sex (including pregnancy, childbirth and related conditions), sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, marital status, partnership status, disability, genetic information, alienage, citizenship, military or veteran status, unemployment status, status as a victim of domestic violence/stalking/sex offenses, or any other legally prohibited basis in accordance with federal, state and city laws. Additionally, as a federal contractor, CUNY engages in affirmative action for women, minorities, individuals with disabilities, and veterans consistent with federal requirements for employees in all title groups. Italian Americans are also included among CUNY’s protected groups. Please visit the CUNY website, www.cuny.edu, to view the Equal Opportunity Policy in its entirety, including complaint procedures and prohibition against retaliation.

CUNY’s executive and administrative officers are responsible for maintaining a work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment, and for promoting diversity and inclusion in their respective units. I, Gladys Palma de Schrynemakers, am the responsible official charged with implementation of affirmative action regulations. I encourage all managers to contact me to discuss diversity and inclusion strategies that would advance their unit’s strategic goals. Any individual who believes that he or she has experienced employment discrimination should immediately contact me (Gladys.schrynemakers@slu.cuny.edu).

I ask for your continued support to ensure equal opportunity, affirmative action, and diversity and inclusion in all employment practices at the CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies.

Sincerely,

Gladys Palma de Schrynemakers
Chief Academic Officer/ Senior Associate Dean of Academic Affairs  and Chief Diversity Officer

Title IX

SPARC Training Program

As part of New York State Education Law 129-b, also called the Enough is Enough (“EIE”) statute, requires that all NYS colleges provide students with ongoing education and training about sexual misconduct, including domestic violence, dating violence, stalking, sexual harassment, gender-based harassment and sexual violence.

CUNY has implemented a program called SPARC (Sexual & Interpersonal Violence Prevention And Response Course) to provide students with this training. SPARC is an online training module developed by SUNY in collaboration with CUNY that educates students* about sexual misconduct, ways to prevent it, and the campus’ response to a complaint. The content has been customized to reflect New York State requirements and CUNY policies.

To access the SPARC course, log onto Blackboard. On the Home page, look for My Organizations and the Training course will be listed as “School of Labor & Urban Studies Students SPARC SPRING 2019.” If you do not see the course, please contact SLU’s Chief Student Affairs Officer at rochel.pinder-cuffie@slu.cuny.edu or Title IX Coordinator at Meghan.Moore-Wilk@slu.cuny.edu.

See SPARC FAQ and Student Instruction Sheet for more information.

*NOTE: All incoming students (first-year and transfers) are required to complete SPARC training as are student government members, student leaders and members of other student groups designated by the University and/or College.
