In April 2024, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) issued final regulations under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requiring state and local government entities, including public colleges and universities, to ensure that digital content and services are accessible to individuals with disabilities. Public institutions must comply with the federal requirements by April 24, 2027. New York State further requires public-facing digital content and services to meet accessibility standards by January 1, 2027. Ensuring digital accessibility promotes equitable access and improves the user experience for everyone.
