Inneshia Hart’s life changed after she gave birth to her second child. A home health aide, she had to return to work just three weeks after her son was born. The immense toll that took led her to become an activist in her union, SEIU 1199, and then a staff organizer. She’s served in that position for 11 years, and now she’s striving to attain her B.A. in Labor Studies as well. Labor Studies Prof. Penny Lewis calls SLU “the perfect place” due to great students, collegial faculty, and being grounded in the real-life labor movement and politics. A sociologist by training, Lewis has worked for and been a member of an array of unions. She currently serves on the Executive Council of the PSC-CUNY union. A Manhattan native, Lewis was one of SLU’s original full-time faculty members and worked at its preceding Murphy Institute as well. Read more about Prof. Lewis..
