Bachelor’s Degree in Urban and Community Studies is specifically tailored for students who possess a keen interest in the complexities of urban environments, as well as the social, economic, and political issues that arise within diverse working-class communities.This comprehensive program delves into various facets of urban life, including public policy and administration, the organizational structure of urban government and agencies, the provision of social services, and the significance of community and labor organization. By integrating the disciplines of sociology, economics, political science, and anthropology, the field of urban and community studies offers a holistic understanding of our ever-evolving global economy and culture. As part of this program, students are provided with invaluable opportunities for hands-on experiential learning, such as engaging in fieldwork and participating in workplace-based projects within the dynamic setting of New York City.

The Urban Studies Certificates offer students and opportunity to acquire the necessary educational and professional qualifications to embark on rewarding careers in public administration, healthcare leadership and advocacy, community leadership. Undergraduate certificate programs help  students seeking to finish a bachelor’s degree or earn an important credential to advance in the workplace. Students learn to analyze urban social problems, lead within complex organizations, and produce social change.

Urban Studies Undergraduate Programs

The CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies vision derives from its core values: access to education, diversity at every level, social justice, and equality for all.

Certificate in Public Administration and Public Policy

The program aims to equip students with fundamental knowledge of government agencies, social services, and the process of policy making. Obtaining serves as a valuable educational achievement but also enhances professional credentials for individuals working in the public and non-profit sectors.

Certificate in Healthcare Leadership and Advocacy

The certificate offers great educational and professional value for individuals employed in government, non-profit organizations, and the private health care sector. It is particularly beneficial for those currently working in the field or aspiring to become health care managers and administrators, as well as public policy analysts and advocates.

Certificate in Community Leadership

The program equips students with the necessary abilities to actively engage in political processes on behalf of communities. Students acquire the educational and professional qualifications essential for pursuing careers in public service, nonprofits, community advocacy organizations, government agencies, and elected positions.

The Urban Experience Certificate

The program prepares students for admission into the CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies Bachelor of Arts in Urban and Community Studies or other degree programs. Students acquire a comprehensive knowledge of cities and the crucial role that unions and other organizations play in promoting equal participation among all societal groups.

Certificate in Organizing and Social Change

The Certificate in Organizing and Social Change provides students with the theoretical and historical foundations as well as with the practical skills required to pursue careers as organizers for social change in their communities and workplaces.

The Urban Academy

A partnership between CUNY SLU and partnering community colleges. Participating students receive dual acceptance to their community college associate’s degree program and the CUNY SLU bachelor’s degree programs. Students completing their studies in Urban Academy approved majors, will seamlessly transfer to CUNY SLU and maintain all completed credits.
