Beyond coursework, PSTC offers a rich set of extracurricular and co-curricular experiences that deepen students’ learning, leadership, and connection to public service. Activities are designed to build civic engagement, community impact, professional readiness, social justice awareness, and personal growth. They can be offered during the school year, on weekends, or as part of summer programming and can include any combination of the following types of activities:

Career Exploration and Professional Development:

Students are paired with counselors dedicated to guiding them into public service and social justice careers. They explore the public sector through speaker series with leaders across government, labor, and nonprofits: participate in field visits to City Hall, city agencies, unions, and museums; and professional development workshops offering résumé and LinkedIn support, public speaking, interview practice, and impact writing.

Engagement with SLU’s Public Events:

Through SLU’s robust public programming, PSTC students engage directly with cutting-edge discussions on justice, equity, and democracy. They hear from and meet with influential leaders, deepen their understanding of current issues and expand both their professional horizons and their emerging networks.

Community-Based Service and Social Impact:

Students participate in neighborhood impact projects addressing issues such as food insecurity and tenant rights; days of service partnerships with nonprofits, government agencies, and unions; and intergenerational mentorship with veteran activists and leaders.

Civic Engagement and Public Leadership:

Students engage directly with public life through mock legislative sessions, leadership workshops leader shadowing, and advocacy boot camps focused on campaign building, testimony writing, and coalition work.

Social Justice and Movement-Building:

Students are offered a film series, workshops on worker rights, housing justice, health equity, climate activism, disability justice, and LGBTQ+ rights; oral history and community storytelling projects; and solidarity circles focused on belonging, identity, and community care.

Urban Exploration and Cultural Learning:

Students participate in “See Your City” walking tours (Harlem, Lower East Side, Jackson Heights, labor history, environmental justice sites), behind-the-scenes visits to transit systems, courts, public health labs, archives, and media centers, as well as arts and advocacy collaborations with theaters, muralists, and spoken-word artists.

Health and Wellness:

Students build personal strengths through wellness and time-management workshops and retreats focused on identity and mission.

Community Building:

Students will participate in student-led clubs such as Model City Council, debate team, social justice club, public health ambassadors, and youth research collectives.
