March

Pre-Transition: Preparation

Messages will continue to be sent to students announcing the student email changes coming in Spring 2026 and provide more detail regarding the transition. Messaging may be delivered through multiple channels, including email, web pages, CUNY SLU IT announcement page, campus digital displays, social media, and this SharePoint site.

Student Actions Required:

  • Periodically check their student email and CUNY SLU IT announcement page for more detailed information about the changes coming Spring 2026 and actions they should take.
  • Identify where they have used their student email address as their contact email in other applications and services so they can change it post transition.
  • Review and manage content in their current student email account(s), such as deleting unnecessary emails and downloading or saving attachments to OneDrive or Dropbox.
  • Recommended: Set up Microsoft MFA in advance of spring break. This lets you work through any MFA issues before you need MFA to access your new CUNY email account after transition. To setup your Microsoft MFA you sign in with your CUNYfirst account at https://aka.ms/MFASetup and select + Add sign-in method.

April 1- April 12

Transition

IT does the following:

  • Creates students’ new CUNY email accounts and enables Microsoft MFA as part of the login process.
  • Sets students’ preferred email address in CUNYfirst to their new college-branded student email address.
  • Propagates students’ new email address to CUNY-wide applications.
  • Adds rules to students’ college-based email account to automatically:
Forward all incoming email to students’ new CUNY email account
Reply to all incoming email with students’ new email address

April 13 onwards

Post Transition

IT copies email from students’ old student email account to the new CUNY email account, see FAQs  for; What email information will CUNY copy to my new CUNY email account?

Student Actions Required:

  • On Monday, April 13, students should log in to Microsoft 365 online, open Outlook, and confirm that their new cunylogin@cuny.edu inbox is displayed. If students have not already set up Microsoft MFA, they will have to do so when logging in for the first time.
  • Students should begin checking their new CUNY email account for official college and CUNY email, including any updates regarding their email transition.
  • Students should begin using the Microsoft 365 applications associated with their new CUNY email account.
  • If necessary, students can copy or forward the information they need from their old student email account to their new CUNY email account if they cannot wait for it to be copied.
  • Where appropriate, students should change their contact email address in other applications and services to their new email address.
  • Students should email the Service Desk at ServiceDesk@slu.cuny.edu if they encounter issues accessing or using the new CUNY email account.
