Two SLU students who are both in their final year of the Urban Studies Master’s program recently won CUNY-wide awards that provide financial support and professional experience.
Urban Studies M.A. student Daniel Flamhaft has been accepted into the Edward T. Rogowsky Internship Program in Government and Public Affairs. The ETR program serves as CUNY’s hub for students seeking to build workforce skills and networks through internships in the public sector of New York City and State. In mid-September, Daniel began as an intern in the office of State Assemblymember Charles Fall, who represents parts of Staten Island, Brooklyn and Manhattan in the state legislature.
“This work is meaningful to me because I have the opportunity to support my local community,” Daniel said. “I hope to help constituents navigate issues that impact their daily lives and well-being, while deepening my knowledge about the functioning of a legislative office.”
Bria Joseph, who is in her final semester of the Urban Studies M.A. program, won the Jacqueline Schiller Fund Scholarship, which she said “feels like a vote of confidence in my potential, and that motivation is just as important as the financial support.”
In her job as a Community Coordinator at the NYC Department of City Planning, Bria helps keep projects moving forward, coordinates with stakeholders, assists with production at City Planning meetings, and ensures that community voices are part of the planning process.
“Looking ahead, I want to build a career that balances research and public service,” Bria said. “My time at SLU has shown me how important it is not just to implement policy, but to understand the fundamental dynamics shaping our communities. Long-term, I hope to be in a position where I can both influence policy and mentor others who want to make change.”
