Student Email Transition – Spring Break 2026

  • Student Email Transition – Spring Break 2026

    • One Mailbox for all your Email

    • Student Email Transition Timeline

Starting April 6th, 2026 CUNY will begin transitioning all active student email accounts within the past 9 months to a new CUNY-wide email account.

This change will improve your overall email experience and make communication across CUNY simpler and more reliable.

What’s Changing?

Your current student email will move to a new CUNY Microsoft 365 mailbox. This new mailbox will provide:

  • One Microsoft 365 mailbox and one login for all your CUNY SLU and CUNY email addresses
  • Reliable delivery of all official CUNY SLU and CUNY messages
  • Full integration with Microsoft 365 apps for easier file sharing and collaboration
  • Enhanced protection against phishing, malicious links, and spam

Your New Student Email Account

When you return from Spring Break on April 13, your new email account will use your CUNY Login:

firstname.lastname##@login.cuny.edu

These email addresses will automatically route to your new mailbox:

  • firstname.lastname##@stu-mail.slu.cuny.edu – your new CUNY SLU student email
  • firstname.lastname##@cuny.edu – your new University email address

If you currently have multiple college email addresses, each will receive a new, updated address connected to this single mailbox. After the transition, you will be able to send and receive email from all addresses associated with your CUNY mailbox.

All the email sent to any of these email addresses, as well as email sent to any of your CUNY email addresses if you have multiple CUNY roles or college affiliations, will be delivered to the one mailbox—cunylogin@login.cuny.edu. You can choose to send email from any of the email addresses associated with your new CUNY mailbox.

What Happens to Your Current Email?

You do not have to worry about losing any of your email as you will continue to have access to your current SLU email account after the transition to the new CUNY email account.

We will also do the following to help ease the transition to your new CUNY email account:

  • set up an auto-forward rule in your current SLU email account to forward all new email to your new CUNY email account
  • set up an auto-reply rule in your current SLU email account to inform senders of your new email address
  • copy your current SLU email contents to your new CUNY email account after the transition

Your new email account and Microsoft 365 applications will require MFA

After your email is transition, CUNY will require Microsoft Multi-factor Authentication (MFA) when you log into your new CUNY email account and Microsoft 365 applications. Microsoft MFA is:

  • Only used when accessing your new CUNY email account and Microsoft 365 applications
  • Separate from the CUNY Login MFA used to access other applications like Brightspace and CUNYFirst.

Transition timeline

Your new CUNY email account and Microsoft MFA will be enabled over the Spring Break and ready for your use on Monday, April 13th, 2026 when you return.

How to Prepare for these Changes

  • Consider setting up Microsoft MFA for use with your new CUNY email account and Microsoft 365 applications now instead of waiting until April 13.
  • Identify where you have used your current email address as the contact email in other applications and services so you know where to make changes after the transition.
  • Review and manage content in your current email account, such as deleting unnecessary emails and saving attachments to OneDrive or Dropbox.

What happens to my OneDrive files?

Students will receive a new OneDrive account with their new Student Email Account. Students will need to copy over their OneDrive files from their legacy OneDrive Account to their new OneDrive account to retain access to their files.

What will happen to Alumni Email Accounts after April 13th 2026?

  • Legacy Alumni Email accounts will not be transitioning and will retain the @slu3.cuny.edu email address.
  • Students who will become Alumni after April 13th, 2026 will automatically have their Student Email Account converted to Alumni Email Account with Email access only. Access to OneDrive will be removed and it is highly recommended that students should begin saving any OneDrive files they wish to keep.
  • CUNY requires users to change their CUNY Login passwords every 180 days. Users will receive a reminder email notifying when it is time to change their passwords.
  • Alumni who wish to keep their Alumni Email Accounts must actively use their account. After 12 months of inactivity, Alumni Email Accounts will automatically be deleted by CUNY CIS.
