Senior Writer Karen Loew came to the School of Labor and Urban Affairs equipped with expertise in journalism and public policy, a passion for education and organizing, and deep appreciation for the missions of SLU and CUNY.

A past editor in chief of City Limits who also served as an OpEd editor of the Daily News, and as an editor at THE CITY and the Forward, Karen understands the diversity of media voices – and their importance in conveying SLU’s unique contributions.

Her own published work on a range of urban issues includes articles in The Atlantic, The New York Times, CityLab, Next City, and Change Over Time, a UPenn journal.

In previous roles at CUNY, Karen taught journalism to undergraduates at Lehman College and at City College, where she also launched the student publication Harlem View.

Her enthusiasm for public space and the built environment led her to work for neighborhood preservation in the East Village, play an early role in saving the High Line, and make two short films about unique places.

She brings all this to bear as she helps to heighten the School’s profile, supporting the work of Marketing and Communications and of Founding Dean Gregory Mantsios.

Karen has a BA in English Literature from the University of Virginia. Earlier in her career, she worked as a reporter in the Shenandoah Valley and Middle Tennessee.
