Partnership Programs are developed through linkages between CUNY SLU and unions or other organizations. Students enrolled in these programs may qualify for free or reduced cost tuition.

In partnership with Brooklyn Communities Collaborative (BCC), CUNY SLU offers eligible students living in Brooklyn (“Fellows”) a four- course Advanced Certificate in Workplace Democracy and Community Ownership (WDCO). BCC will cover the cost of tuition and fees for each fellow enrolled in WDCO.

Credible Messenger Mentoring is a program where youths in the juvenile justice system are mentored by individuals from similar backgrounds, especially those who were themselves system-involved, to help the youths transform their lives. The CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies (SLU) partners with the Department of Probation’s Credible Messenger Justice Center to enroll eligible Credible Messengers in the Community Leadership Certificate Program (undergraduate or graduate level). For participants in this program, the application fee is waived, and tuition is paid by the Credible Messenger Justice Center.

The CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies, partnered with District Council 37’s Education Fund, offers Certificate in Labor Relations to DC37 members interested in learning more about the labor movement, labor relations, and unionism. DC37 sponsors 4-courses for members enrolled in the following programs:

  • Certificate in Labor Relations
  • BA in Urban Studies, Labor Relations Track (any 4-courses in Labor Studies)
  • Advanced Certificate in Labor Relations
  • MA Labor Studies

The Resident Leadership Academy Program is a partnership between the Fund for Public Housing, New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) and the CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies. It is designed to provide training and build leadership skills for residents interested in taking a more active role in civic life within their development and community. The program’s objective is to foster transferable leadership skills that residents can use across their communities and provide a pathway to higher education.

The Community Leadership Certificate is a tuition-free* program for eligible “Resident Leaders”

In partnership with the Transport Workers Union Local 100/New York City Transit Authority Training and Upgrading Fund, CUNY SLU offers two courses tuition free:

  • Development of Mass Transit in New York City
  • Worker Health and Safety.

Eligible Union or Community Semester Participants receive up to $7K towards the cost of tuition, fees, and other educational expenses.

Billing and Payments

US/CS Participants @ SLU:

  • Tuition is charged to all Union and Community Semester (US/CS) participants
  • Experiential Learning will cover your bill, so you are not required to pay anything out-of-pocket; your account will be notated in anticipation of a department scholarship
  • Note: liability for tuition is transferred back to you if the minimum program requirements are not met (see: enrollment verification and site verification). In this case, tuition and fees will be billed to you in accordance with the University adjustment schedule for all enrolled courses as of the first official day of the semester

US/CS Participants on E-permit:

  • Tuition is charged at your home school and must be paid by the campus assigned due date; inquire with your Bursar’s Office

Department Scholarships

US/CS Participants @ SLU:

  • Department Scholarships are scheduled for disbursement once you pass an enrollment and site verification, which is approximately 45-days after the start of term
    • Enrollment Verification: you are enrolled in all courses required to complete the certificate and in good academic standing
    • Site Verification: you are actively engaged and in good standing with the internship site
  • Department Scholarships exceeding the cost of tuition are refunded to the student via check (mailing address on file) OR Direct Deposit (requires opt-in)

US/CS Participants on E-permit:

  • Internship Awards are scheduled for disbursement once you pass an enrollment and site verification, which is approximately 45-days after the start of term
    • Enrollment Verification: you are enrolled in all courses required to complete the certificate and in good academic standing
    • Site Verification: you are actively engaged and in good standing with the internship site
  • Internship Awards are mailed to you as a paper check and can be used for tuition, fees, and other related expenses

Department Scholarships/Internship Awards are not compensation for services (wages) when provided as part of a training program. However, these funds may be considered taxable income based on individual circumstances. CUNY cannot provide tax advice. Students are encouraged to consult a professional tax adviser for all tax-related questions. Students receiving unemployment benefits should contact their state’s unemployment agency to learn about the specific provisions applicable to attending school.
